How to Sew an iPad Cover- Easy Free Pattern!

Hello, hello! It is lovely to see you! I have a double treat for you today- a free pattern for an iPad cover AND my once a year very special competition. Read all the way to the end for that one.

It is always sad when we have to say goodbye to something that we love and for me it is farewell to my beloved iPad cover. I made this about seven years ago so I cannot complain about it. It has been in constant use too so I think that a thanksgiving (much more relevant to the month of November) might be more in order.

This pattern works well. It is simple. It is unfussy. It is padded and it has one large and very easy zipper pocket so it is a secure place to put my Apple Pencil too. It is everything that it needs to be and nothing that we don’t need. It is also Fat Quarter friendly. So with all this in mind, I decided that it was worth updating and remaking. Some things are like that.

So what do we need to make a simple iPad cover?

  • Fat Quarter of canvas or similar reasonably thick fabric for the exterior
  • Fat Quarter cotton fabric for the lining
  • Fat Quarter foam interfacing. I am using Style-vil by Vlieseline but any 1/4″ thick foam interfacing will work.
  • 7″ zipper for the front pocket
  • A strip of leather or vegan leather about 1/4″ wide x about 6″ long to decorate the front zipper pull
  • Your usual sewing needs

Cutting List:

TIP: all seam allowances are 1/4″ and have already been added. This cover fits my 9 1/2″ iPad and measures 7 3/4″ wide x 10″ tall.

From the exterior canvas:

  • 1 piece 8 1/4″ wide x 10 1/2″ tall for the back exterior panel
  • 1 piece 8 1/4″ wide x 8″ tall for the front zipper pocket lower panel
  • 1 piece 8 1/4″ wide x 2 1/2″ tall for the front zipper pocket upper panel

From the lining cotton:

  • 2 pieces 8 1/4″ wide x 10 1/2″ tall for the main front and back lining panels
  • 1 piece 8 1/4″ wide x 8″ tall for the front zipper pocket lining: front
  • 1 piece 8 1/4″ wide x 9″ tall for the front zipper pocket lining: back

TIP: there are no cutting notes for the foam interfacing. You need a piece of Style-vil about 1/2″ larger all around than the panel that you are interfacing. Pin or clip the exterior panel to the foam and attach it with a narrow (1/8″) machine basting stitch, keeping the exterior panel gently taut as you baste.

Let’s begin by constructing the front zipper pocket. Lay the zipper onto the front zipper pocket lower exterior panel with the right sides facing and baste the zipper in (it doesn’t have to be perfect, it is only there to hold the zip and will not be seen)

Lay the front lining panel, also right sides together, over the top of the basted in zip and sew along the zip again

Flip the layers the right way out so that the zipper is uppermost and press the seam. The exterior panel and lining will be wrong sides facing. Topstitch twice under the zip- the fist pass at 1/8″ and the second, 1/4″ under that

Machine baste the layers of the pocket together on the sides and bottom to keep them neat and easy to handle. Bring in the zipper pocket upper panel and pin or clip this to the top of the zip, right sides facing. Make sure that everything is nicely central and that one long edge of the upper panel is flush with the top of the zip. Sew along the zip

Flip the panel up and press. Lay everything onto the onto the front zipper pocket back lining and make sure that the sides and base are flush. The right sides of both the lining panels will be together

Baste the sides and base. Topstitch narrowly (1/8″) along the top of the zip

Lay the front panel onto a slightly larger piece of foam interfacing and baste narrowly (1/8″) all around, keeping the panel taut as you sew

Trim the foam interfacing back to the seam allowance

The back is even easier. Attach the back panel to a slightly larger piece of foam interfacing and trim the excess foam back to the seam allowance

To finish, pin or clip the exterior panels right sides together and sew the sides and bottom edge, leaving no gaps. Clip across the bottom corners to reduce bulk. Turn the exterior the right way out.

Repeat for the lining panels but this time leave a small turning gap in the bottom seam. With the exterior the right way out and the lining inside out, pull the lining on over the outer and line the side seams up

Sew right around the top edge leaving no gaps. Turn out through the gap in the lining and close that gap

Stuff the lining down into the the case

Roll the top edge until it is perfect and then topstitch twice around the top edge. The first pass at 1/8″ and the second 1/4″ under that

Decorate the zipper pull with your leather or vegan leather strip

And that’s it! This is an easy make and one that even a teenager will appreciate. Gift giving season is coming up, after all! And speaking of giving gifts, I would love to hand out some presents to you too!
