The Windermere Sling sounds like a fancy cocktail but it is in fact a really nicely sized sling bag (somewhere between a backpack and a cross body) and it is so comfortable.
The ideal sling bag has to be hardwearing, stylish, functional and useful. No one has any use for a bag that is not quite perfect. Just falls short of the mark. No-one got time for that!
I want to be able to carry my water bottle, my favourite purse and a few other essentials and I want the bag to be perfectly balanced so that it doesn’t drag on my back. This bag is great as a day bag and as soon as Germany is done with lockdown, I am taking this one on a city walk just to let it stretch its legs.
The Windermere Sling is the culmination of about six months of planning and crossing out, some very involved maths and a lot of staring out of the window and dreaming about where I would take this bag if only I could get it right.
And the fabric had to be just right. I thought about canvas and then I saw this green oilskin. I fell deeply and irretrievably in love! Oilskin gives this just the right amount of outdoorsy and it is perfect for the style. Canvas would work wonderfully too of course and I am sorta-kinda thinking about another one….
Given the handy size of 11 1/2″ tall, 7 1/2″ wide x 3″ deep, it is also a great size for a school backpack option. Imagine this in canvas with a children’s print!
The lining comes together really easily too and it is attached as you go along which means a great fit and then the seams are simply bound to hide them.
This bag features some pretty handy pockets too. I opted for a lapped style zipper pocket on the front for security and inside there is a zipper box pocket and two lined slip pockets. But don’t be put off by the zippers – I have a few handy blog masterclasses for you which go into each of these pockets in detail and the links are all in the pattern.
This is a cut and measure pattern which means that there is no pattern to be printed and sized – you simply need a rotary cutter, ruler and mat. The pattern is suitable for a confident beginner onwards and you get heaps of help along the way with 15 pages of detailed instructions with tips and photos.
This pattern is live in the shop now and best of all, it is just in time for my Big November Event which is a great competition if you are a bag maker – any bag pattern sold during the month of November 2020 will go into a draw to win FIVE more patterns from my shop of the winner’s choice!
The winner will be announced on this blog on December 1st 2020 so do subscribe so that you don’t miss out.
I am off now to plan another freebie pattern for my blog – I have a great idea which I think that you will like.
‘Till then stay safe
